Aya was born in Japan and raised in London, UK where she graduated from London Contemporary Dance School with a BA in Dance. She relocated to New York City in 2014. Aya trained in a variety of dance styles alongside her formal training which led her to work in genres including contemporary African, Jazz, Latin, swing, Yosakoi and physical theater.
She toured UK and Europe with Movement Angol Contemporary African Dance Company, Irven Lewis Jazz Dance Theater and Off the Rails Dance (Belfast). She currently performs for 10tecomai Yosakoi Dance Project and performs each year at Cherry Blossom Festivals throughput the US.
Choreography credits include Islington Arts Factory Teenage Contemporary Company and two collaborations with award winning composer Bushra el Turk in the UK. Since being in the US Aya has choreographed and presented her work in shows, events and galas including for RSC Westchester for their Dance and Special Needs Programs and “A look inside” with Pibly residents exploring mental health directed by Connie Pacheco presented at BAAD, Bronx, NY. She also creates and presents her own dance theater work through “Who Knows The Show” a dance theater collective which has been shown in theaters and dance festivals throughout the city.
Aya is a passionate and experienced dance educator for youth and adults, she also has specialist training in adaptive dance with electives in dance and disability during her degree, dance for special needs training with Dianne Duggan at the 92nd Y, certifications in adult education through City Literature Institute in London, UK. She has taught outreach for dance companies and in the Public School system both in the UK and in the US. She is also a qualified Yoga and Pilates mat instructor.
